In Zagreb, Croatia, from 4th to 6th of Jne 2023. project team meetings were held within the PICK ONE LEAVE NONE project activities.
The meetings were attended by all project partners, and the main topic of these meetings was the analysis of the results of testing three variants of the tool kit on mountain tours, as well as the adoption of the final set for waste collection and the definition of simple and safe P1L0 principles that will be communicated to the target groups.
At the beginning of the meeting, project manager Nenad Lečič (PK Tara) presented a brief overview of the activities carried out in the previous period, i.e. the implementation of three field actions on which 3 models were tested in order to examine their applicability in the field and to get opinions from mountaineers based on a questionnaire which was defined at the previous meeting.
After that, a representative of RRA Zlatibor had a detailed analysis of the collected data.
After the presentation of the results, each of the representatives of the mountaineering clubs presented their experiences and observations regarding the testing, where almost everyone agreed that the inclusion of the bags increases the amount of collected waste, that the mountaineers reacted well and accepted the cigarette box and that the disinfectant hand has no significant impact on the collection of waste and that most mountaineers do not use it after the end of the tour. Accordingly, it was proposed to create and propose a bag that would be the most practical for use on the track, i.e. it should be of suitable size, with practical parts for hanging on a backpack and, if possible, made of waterproof material, bearing in mind the different weather conditions in which hiking tours are carried out. Also, everyone expressed the impression that mountaineers respond well to the project and are ready to apply one of the chosen principles of safe waste collection.
Taking into account the results of the analysis and the practical experience of testing the sets in the field, it was unanimously decided to choose Set 2 (a bag for all types of solid waste, made of already used textiles – reuse and a cigarette box) to be used for the implementation of a simple and safe waste collection.
The next part of the meeting was about defining the next steps in the process of communication, education and visibility of P1L0 principles towards different target groups in order to present the model/toolkit in the best possible way.
After the end of the meeting, a visit to the Medvednica Nature Park and a conversation with nature guardians regarding the problems they face in connection with waste disposal and nature conservation in general was organized.
